How to Calculate Quantity of Asphalt

How to Calculate Quantity of Asphalt: Asphalt is type of material which is made from aggregate bitumen and sand dust. Mainly Asphalt is used to construct flexible pavement. Before start construction any type of flexible pavement we need to know How to Calculate Quantity of Asphalt.
How to Calculate Quantity of Asphalt

WHAT IS ASPHALT?

Asphalt is mainly made up with two ingredients, which is aggregate and bitumen. Aggregate is the mix of gravel and crushed stone. Aggregate covers up 95% volume of Asphalt and rest 5% volume is made up of Bitumen. Bitumen is dark black greasy texture material which is very viscous. Bitumen works as binder in Asphalt and it is the composed of polycyclic hydrocarbon.
Most of the people confused in Asphalt and Bitumen. So here is the difference between Asphalt and Bitumen.

Bitumen is liquid viscous material which works as binder in Asphalt. Mostly people use bitumen word to describe Asphalt.

How to Calculate Quantity of Asphalt:

Now we will take an example and will show you How to Calculate Quantity of Asphalt very simply.

Let’s assume an area of 100x120 feet in rectangular shape and also an circular area of diameter 60 feet. These both rectangular and circular shapes area are connected together and we will find Asphalt quantity of these shapes as a single unit.

Now we will find area rectangle and circle.

Area of Rectangle = L x B
                                 =100x120
                                 =12000 square feet

Area of Circle     = ( Ï€/4) x D2
                        =(3.14/4) x 602
                        =2826 square feet

(Value of π=3.14 and D denotes Diameter of Circle)

Total Area= Area of Rectangle+ Area of Circle
                      =12000+2826
                       =14826 square feet
Now
Volume=Area x Thickness of Pavement

(NOTE- ASSUME THICKNESS TO PAVEMENT IS 6” OR 0.5’)

Volume=14826 x 0.5
               =7413 cubic feet

Weight of Asphalt= Volume x Density of Asphalt                       (Density of Asphalt=145 Pond/Feet3)
                                 = 7413 x 145
                                = 1074885 Pond

Weight of Asphalt In Tonne =1074885/2000                                         (1 Tonne= 2000 Pond)
                                              =537.44 Tonne

So 537.44 Tonne Asphalt is need for the  area of 14826 square feet.

Conclusion:

For every Civil Site engineer who is working in road sector it is very important to How to Calculate Quantity of Asphalt because it is first step for road construction.
