Thumb Rules For
Estimation of the Quantity of Material Every Civil Engineer uses Thumb Rules For Estimation of the Quantity
of Material. By using thumb rules we can get rough quantity very easily and
fastly. Thumb rules don’t give us exact value but these values are very near to
accurate data so we can adopt it and save our time.
What is Thumb Rules
For Estimation of the Quantity of Material
Thumb Rules For
Estimation of the Quantity of Material is some constant data which we drive
from our technique and experience of practical world. Just for example 0.2 or 0.5
multiplying by covered area by thumb
rule we can get some specific quantity.
To understand properly let’s see the example-
EXAMPLE-
Let’s assume we have completed four house constrictions. All
four houses have 1200 square feet covered area. In each house construction different
quantity of cement, aggregate, sand is used. So we will develop Thumb Rules For Estimation of the Quantity
of Material (cement, aggregate and sand).

NOTE- Above
mentioned values are just for examples not based on any specified design.
To develop Thumb Rules For Estimation of the Quantity
of Material we will take avareage value of all materials.
CEMENT-
Average=(600+610+590+585)/4
=596.25 Bags
So we can say 596.25 bags are used averagely So now we find
usage of cement in 1 square feet area.
Covd Area=Material Used
1200 feet2 Area=596.25 Cement Bags
1 feet2 = (596.25/1200)
=0.496 bags
So 0.49 is our Thumb Rules
For Estimation of the Quantity of Cement.
Now if we need to calculate quantity consumption of cement in
2500 square feet area. We have to just multiply area with 0.49 to get quantity
of cement.
SAND-
Average= 1800+1900+2100+200)/4
=1950 feet3
So we can say 1950 feet3 Sand is used averagely So
now we find usage of sand in 1 square feet area.
1200 feet2
Area =1950 feet3 Sand
1 feet2 = (1950/1200)
=1.62
So 1.62 is our Thumb Rules
For Estimation of the Quantity of SAND.
Now if we need to calculate quantity consumption of sand in 2500
square feet area. We have to just multiply area with 1.62 to get quantity of
sand.
AGGREGATE-
Average= (1700+1600+1800+1500)/4
=1650 feet3
So we can say 1650 feet3 Aggregate is used averagely.
So now we find usage of Aggregate in 1 square feet area.
1200 feet2
Area =1650 feet3 Aggregate
1 feet2 = (1650/1200)
=1.37
So 1.37 is our Thumb Rules
For Estimation of the Quantity of AGGREGATE.
Now if we need to calculate quantity consumption of aggregate
in 2500 square feet area. We have to just multiply area with 1.37 to get quantity
of aggregate.
Conclusion-
Thumb Rules For
Estimation of the Quantity of Material is the self-develop method by experience.
It helps us to do work fastly at site. It gives us approximate value which is nearly
