Types of Soil: Soil is formed due to weathering of
rocks which may be carried out either physically or chemically. Physical force involved
in weathering of rocks are flowing water, ice, wind and gravity. Chemical
forces includes in weathering of rocks are oxidation, reduction and
carbonation. Now we should also understand Types of Soil, what are the Types
of Soil? what are their qualities? So let’s learn Types of Soil.
Types of Soil
There are fifteen Types of Soil (it may be
more than 15 but we are going to discuss major Types of Soil).
1. Alluvial Soil: Alluvial is the soil which is being deposited from suspension in running water. Alluvial soil is also called transported soil. It is formed due to physical weathering. Alluvial soil is found near the river banks. Alluvial soil is found mostly Northern India rivers bank.
2. Lacustrine Soil: It is the soil that is deposited from the suspension in fresh still water of lakes. Lacustrine soil is formed due to physical weathering. Lacustrine soil is also called residual water soil.
3. Marine Soil: It is the soil which is deposited from suspension in sea water. Marine soil is formed due to physical weathering. It is transported soil.
4. Aeoline Soil: Aeoline soil is formed due to transportation by wind. Aeoline soil is formed due to physical weathering.
5. Glacial Soil: Glacial soil is that soil being transported due to flowing ice. Glacial soil is formed due to physical weathering.
6. Colluvial Soil: Colluvial soil is also known as Tallus Soil. Colluvial soil is formed due to physical weathering of rocks by physical agencies and in which transportation is by the gravitational forces. Calluvial soil is generally found in hilly areas at the bottom of the villages.
7. Loess Soil: Loess soil is uniformly graded wind-blown silt that is slightly cemented due to calcium compounds and montmorrilonite. Loess soil is a types of Aeoline soil. Cementous property is induced by calcium compounds and montmorrilonite (highly plastic in nature.
8. Marl Soil: It is fine graded calcium carbonated soil of marine origin which is formed due to decomposition of bones and cells mass of aquatic life (both plants and animals). Marl soil is formed due to chemical weathering.
9. Bentonite Soil: Bentonite soil is volcanic ash that is generally used as a lubricant in drilling. Bentonite soil is formed due to chemical weathering.
10. Tuff Soil: Tuff soil is finely graded and slightly cemented volcanic ash, which may be transported either by wind or by water. Tuff is soil is formed due to physical weathering.
11. Loam Soil: Loam soil is mixture of clay, silt, and sand in definite or different proportions in which organic matter may also be present. Loam soil is formed due to physical weathering.

12. Laterite Soil: Laterite soil is the soil which is formed due to leaching process (Leaching means washing out of silicious compounds) in hilly areas with humid atmosphere. Laterite soil is formed due to chemical weathering.
13. Gumbo Soil: Gumbo soil is sticky, highly plastic and dark in color. Montmorrilonite is present is Gumbo soil in very high quantity.
14. Peat Soil: Peat soil is highly organic soil that is almost entirely consists of vegetative matter in different stages of decomposition. Its color varies from black to dark brown and is possess organic odor. This soil is highly fibrous and possesses high compressibility. Peat soil is formed due to chemical weathering.
15. Muck Soil: Muck soil is fine particled mixture of inorganic soil and black decomposed organic soil. It is generally found in the areas having in deficient sewerage facilities or may be observed after over flooding of river. Mixture of Peat Soil and Muck Soil is termed as Cumulose Soil.
Conclusion:
Soil
is mainly formed due to natural weathering process. There are many Types of Soil present
